Ares calls down the judgment of the Furies upon Xena; they agree that she will suffer persecution and madness. Alecto invokes the judgment of madness while Xena is fighting off some bounty hunters. She tosses away her sword and fights on in a lunatic manner.

Gabrielle gets worried when she finds out that the bounty was put on Xena's head by a priest at the temple of the Furies. She tries to persuade Xena to go to the temple and find out why she is being punished but cannot make her listen. In the night a delusional Xena is about to torch some villagers when Gabrielle stops her. The enormity of her error gets through to her and she accompanies Gabrielle to the temple of the Furies.

The priest at the temple confirms that the Furies have given her the double punishment for the crime under their law of failing to avenge her father's murder. The punishment will continue until his death is avenged. Xena flees the temple and runs through the forest beset by hallucinations. Gabrielle calms her madness just long enough for Xena to tie her up and prevent her following while she is so dangerous to be around.

Xena is being tended by her mother Cyrene when Gabrielle catches up with her. Cyrene tells Gabrielle that when Xena was seven she killed her husband to prevent him sacrificing Xena to Ares.

Ares appears to Xena as she prepares to throw herself off a cliff. She seems persuaded by him to kill her mother instead of herself with the proviso that the Furies are present at the kill. Ares agrees to have them appear and Xena departs to fetch her mother.

Xena goads her mother into telling how her father returned from war unexpectedly one night, the night Xena must have been conceived. Mother and daughter depart for the Furies' temple.

Ares summons the Furies to witness the act of vengeance. Xena, despite her madness, convinces the Furies that Ares is her father therefore she cannot be guilty of the crime with which he charged her. Moreover, he sought to have her driven mad to make it easier for him to bring her to his side.

Synopsis by Don MacLeod:
Xena and Gabrielle wake up at cockcrow in a stable. Joxer arrives with goose eggs for breakfast. A horseshoe falls into the egg basket smashing the eggs and the yolk is on Joxer. Xena has to go and get some horseshoes. Gabrielle and Joxer accompany her through the town marketplace. They pass members of feuding families quarreling, swords drawn. Hearing shouts behind them Xena and Gabrielle run back, arriving at the commotion just in time to see Joxer fall bloody to the ground. Gabrielle tries to revive him but he is dead. His body is committed to a funeral pyre that night.

Xena and Gabrielle wake up at cockcrow in a stable. Joxer arrives with goose eggs for breakfast. Xena pushes Joxer back a little and a horseshoe lands on his foot. He drops the eggs, smashing them. As they walk to the market Xena tries to explain that she has lived the day already. "So you're saying that today is actually yesterday for you," summarizes Gabrielle, "but for us today is today because we can't remember that yesterday was today, right?" "Right!" says Xena. "Well, I don't get it," replies Gabrielle. They near the feuding swordsmen and Xena keeps Joxer away from them. He manages to start another quarrel down an alley and one of the locals is killed. Xena makes some enemies by intervening physically to prevent the fight escalating. That evening at the stable they find Argo dead, destroyed to get back at Xena.

Xena and Gabrielle wake up at cockcrow in a stable. Xena sees Argo alive. Joxer enters with the eggs. Xena advises Joxer to move but he is too daft to obey and the horseshoe hits him on the head, leaving him with egg on his face again. On the way to the market Xena repeats the repetition explanation. Overhearing the cause of the feuding parties' argument, she theorizes that if she can prevent the reason for the quarrel happening she will prevent the bloodshed. Perhaps the day will no longer repeat if she can do this.

At cockcrow Xena barges past Joxer as he enters, knocking him flat with no explanation. She saves an old man from being run over by a carriage. His accident was the cause of the fatal quarrel, she believes. After another explanation for Gabrielle and Joxer she tells them of her hope that this time the day will not repeat. However, at the market she sees the same pair starting to fight over something else. She goes to part them but sees Joxer and Gabrielle entering the fatal alley. Rushing back, she finds Gabrielle stuck through and dying.

As the rooster crows Xena awakens and checks the bedding anxiously to see if Gabrielle is there. Gabrielle rises and Joxer enters to see a puzzled Gabrielle being hugged by Xena. He sees an opportunity and drops the eggs in his haste to get some groping in. On the way to the market, after the explanations, Xena is wondering what more she must do to prevent the day repeating. Joxer proposes it may be the rooster's fault.

As the rooster crows, there is a chakram and a cloud of feathers and silence...

As the rooster crows, Xena wakes screaming.

The rooster crows and Xena charges off to break up all the fights of which she is aware. It dawns on her that if the day is going to repeat ad infinitum she has all the time she needs to find out what she must do. Joxer recites once more his pet theory that the way to reconcile the feudsters is to offer them a common enemy. Xena allows him to test his theory. Unfortunately, the enemy he offers is themselves. They all die in a hail of arrows.

At cockcrow Joxer enters with his eggs. Xena is ready with her chakram and he gets it full in the chest. Xena returns to blissful sleep as Gabrielle gibbers over his corpse, tugging at the embedded weapon.

After cockcrow Xena dresses for action, leaving a stunned Gabrielle and Joxer bound and gagged in the stable. She goes to a herbalist to enquire about any recent dispensing of nightsbane, a broken vial of which she has found during some repetitions. The herbalist's nightsbane is missing and he swears he has not sold any. She visits a midwife who is happy to tell her stories of town life.

As the rooster crows, Xena leaps out of her straw bed and charges past Joxer. She goes about town using the knowledge gained from the repeated days of investigation to tell the townsfolk some home truths. The feuding ends and there is general rejoicing. As Xena and company head off to celebrate the presumed end of the repetitions, we see an unhappy young couple - the girl holding the bottle of nightsbane.

Xena wakes up at cockcrow in a stable, raging in frustration. She raves at her companions who listen in stunned silence as she races through her explanation and the various attempts to prevent the day repeating. Suddenly Xena has a thought about something small she may have overlooked. This does lead to the resolution of the puzzle: she has to prevent the suicide of the young lover with the nightsbane as well as ensure the end of the feud. This is a logistical challenge that seems impossible to overcome because of the number of actions required close together in time but far apart in distance.

Xena spends the next today ignoring all the usual events, just measuring up angles, distances and trajectories. The today after that she executes her plan with some fancy chakram work. The girl is saved and the town united. The day ends.

After cockcrow Xena watches Joxer enter with his breakfast basket. There are turnips in the basket. It is a new day.
