Joxer turns up with a scroll meant for Callisto, inviting her to a competition where the ten fiercest and bravest warriors will fight to become the new god of war. Xena and Ares steal a second scroll (for Ares) and then turn up together for the competition. They soon discover that Sisyphus is responsible for the hoax and that he made a deal with Hades, whereby he will become the new god of war if he can send the ten best warriors to Hades' realm. Xena manages to find Ares' sword and return it to him, whereupon Sisyphus is sent back to the Underworld, Gabrielle stops being angry and Xena's body is returned to her.
