Xena and Gabrielle come across Toris, whom Gabrielle finds out is Xena's other brother. It seems Toris blames Xena for Lyceus's death. Xena finds out that Toris has joined Cortese's army in order to get closer to the warlord so he can kill him. Xena tries to dissuade him but he will not listen.

Eventually, Cortese's men find out who Toris is and they beat him badly and set a trap for Xena. She gets captured but tries to persuade the captain of the guard that the warlord who has been causing so much trouble is the same person as the one who claims to be his king. The captain does not believe her. However, she and Toris escape and prove to the captain that Cortese is a phoney. Xena gives Toris the opportunity to kill Cortese, but he cannot do it. He tells Xena he is going to go home for a while and visit their mother. He and Xena say goodbye and part as friends.

Xena is determined to stop the war so she captures Marmax, one of the leaders and takes him to the temple. At first, he is full of hatred but, after seeing the pain and suffering of both sides, he begins to relent. He helps Xena to deliver Ephiny's baby but Xena realises that Gabrielle has gone missing. She has left the temple to try and help someone. When she is brought in, she has been severely injured and Xena has to use unconventional methods to revive her. By this time, Marmax has seen enough bloodshed and calls for an end to the fighting. Peace is made between the two sides and emotional and physical wounds begin to heal.
