Valhalla ( valr, the slain and hall )
In Scandinavian mythology, the hall where the souls of dead heroes reside for eternity. They are taken there by the Valkyries. Valhalla makes an appearance in "The Rheingold" and "You Are There". It is situated on the pinnacle of a mountain and is capped by a tower crowned with horns.
Valkyries, The (Old Norse - the choosers of the slain)
In Norse mythology, the nine (seven or twelve) handmaidens of Odin are a group of mortal, female warriors who serve Odin by visiting slain warriors on the battlefield. They select the most heroic and brave fighters and take them to the Halls of Valhalla to feast and hone their fighting skills in preparation for the coming of Ragnarok.
In the Xenaverse there are five Valkyrie, including Grinhilda (who was their leader and one-time lover of Odin) and Xena. When Xena first encounters Odin, she talks him out of sacrificing himself on the World Tree. In return, Odin makes Xena a Valkyrie.
The Valkyrie appear in "The Rheingold", "The Ring", "Return Of The Valkyrie" and "You Are There".
Varia
Varia is a fiery Amazon and was the second-in-command to Queen Marga. We first meet her in the episode "Coming Home", when she explains to Xena that Ares is trying to kill the Amazons. She also asks Eve to show her some fighting moves. However, when Eve uses a certain move, Varia realises that she is Livia of Rome, who killed many of her people. Varia challenges Xena over this and insists that Eve must be tried for her crimes against the Amazons. Gabrielle releases Eve but Varia hints that this is not the end of the matter.
In "Dangerous Prey", Varia is searching for Queen Marga, who has gone missing. Someone is trapping and killing Amazons and Marga has gone to search for her missing people. Varia wants to go after her queen but Xena says she will do this. When Varia finds Xena with Marga, she thinks that Marga is passing on her right of caste to Xena by handing her her necklace. She shows animosity towards Xena and the inevitable conclusion happens: they end up fighting and Xena saves Varia's life. From this moment, Varia begins to listen to Xena and seeks her advice. Once Prince Morloch has been dealt with, Queen Marga's spirit is sent to the Land of the Dead and Xena passes the queen's necklace and title to Varia.
Velasca
The sly Amazon who overthrows Melosa then claims the right to be queen (see "The Quest"). Velasca tries to persuade Gabrielle to make her queen, but Gabrielle refuses and takes the Mask of the Queen herself. Angered by this, Velasca takes Autolycus prisoner and discovers the Dagger of Helios in his possession. This enables her to find out about the ambrosia which he and Gabrielle are trying to retrieve in order to revive Xena. After an exhausting fight, Velasca is seriously wounded but manages to recover some ambrosia. After eating this, she becomes a goddess (see "A Necessary Evil"). Xena then has to free Callisto and make her a goddess also in order to beat Velasca. Finally, Xena manages to trap both Callisto and Velasca in a lava flow which she believes will hold them there forever.
Vendor
In "Blind Faith", Gabrielle haggles with this seller for a silk "scrap". Later, Xena asks this same man about the oil which squirted in her eyes whilst she was fighting. She asks if it has sumach in it. He replies that it does.
Vercinix
A hero of Gaul who is captured by Caesar and scheduled to be executed within days (see "When In Rome"). His wife, Mendala asks Xena for help and she and Gabrielle travel to Rome to rescue him. They replace him with Crassus, one of the Roman triumvirate, and make their escape, returning Vercinix to Gaul.
Vidalus
Vidalus is the royal tutor in King Solas' palace (see "Blind Faith"). He reluctantly agrees (under threat from Apex) to tutor Gabrielle in royal etiquette. He is a sensitive soul and agrees to Gabrielle's request to meet the king (who is actually quite dead). Although he is punished for this, he still helps Xena to rescue Gabrielle from certain death and even clonks Apex over the head with a vase! Luckily for Xena, Vidalus has a supply of the herb she needs to restore her sight and he quickly collects some for her. Impressed by Palaemon, he tells Xena and Gabrielle that he intends to become his sidekick. He then hurries off after Palaemon!
Vikings
Old Norse - vikingr, probably from vik creek, sea inlet and ingr - related to Old English ing having a certain quality or being a certain kind of thing. Also called Norsemen or Northmen. Any Danes, Norwegians or Swedes who raided most of north and west Europe between the 8th and 11th centuries.
Denmark and Danish Vikings appear in several Xena episodes. In "Return Of The Valkyrie", Erick was a Viking Lord and Hrothgar a Danish King.
Vikram
The head priest of the local temple, Vikram suspects Eli of bringing evil spirits into the world (see "Devi"). When Xena takes Eli to the temple to hide, they find Vikram has been murdered. Some time later, they find out that the demon Tataka is to blame for his death.
Village Elder
In "Ties That Bind", Atrius is arrested by the village elder because of crimes he committed in that village in the past. He is imprisoned and tells Xena not to worry about him. However, when Xena returns, she finds him strung up in the village square, beaten and close to death. Enraged, Xena gathers her new army and attacks the village. The village elder pleads for mercy but Xena is deaf to his pleas and prepares to attack. It is Gabrielle who stops Xena's murderous rage and the village is spared.
Village Elder
The head villager in the episode "Death Mask". After Xena saves Sera's daughter, Sera asks the village elder to allow Xena to stay in their village. Fearing that Cortese will bring the full force of his army down on their heads if Xena stays, the elder aks Xena to leave his village.
Villager
A crusty old woman who scorns Gabrielle's ideas for defending their village in "The Prodigal". She tells Gabrielle that Potidaea is not her village anymore. Lila defends her sister, saying that Gabrielle is her sister and that Potidaea is as much her village as anyone elses.
Villager
The villager in "In Sickness And In Hell" who has hired Joxer to defend his village from Acestus' army. Joxer manages to succeed in this by feeding the army one of his terrible concoctions. When the villager offers Joxer a monetary reward for his efforts, Joxer is delighted. However, one quick glance at Xena makes him refuse the offered money, although he does suggest that the villager rename the village after Joxer the Mighty!
Villager
One of the villagers who is captured by Livia during her campaign of terror against Eli's followers (see "Eve"). He remains defiant to the end, telling Livia she can kill him but she can't kill his spirit.
Villager #1
One of the villagers in "The Titans" who decide to give the Titans what they want, hoping that they will spare their lives. However, when Xena returns to tell them that Rhodos and Hesiod are "just stains on the ground", the villagers relent and decide to help Xena instead.
Virgil
Virgil is the son of Joxer and Meg. He is first encountered in "Livia" when Gabrielle and Xena are introduced to him. He accompanies them to Rome but gets thrown into prison as an Eli worshipper. After Xena fights Livia in the arena and beats her, Virgil and the others are set free. Virgil then accompanies Xena, Gabrielle and Joxer in pursuit of Livia.
In "Eve", Joxer sends Virgil to fetch Xena when Gabrielle is captured by Livia. Joxer goes after Livia himself and dies protecting Gabrielle. Virgil swears revenge for his father's murder and goes after Livia, along with Xena and Gabrielle. However, he is not given the opportunity to kill her.
In "Motherhood", Eve visits Virgil to ask for his forgiveness. Virgil still wants to kill her but Xena stops him. Virgil then leaves for Athens to be with his mother, Meg.
The next time we encounter Virgil is in the episode "Heart Of Darkness". Gabrielle comes across a man being kicked and beaten to the ground by Virgil. Along with everyone else, he is being affected by the darkness around him. At Xena's party, Virgil and Gabrielle end up kissing passionately, seemingly unconcerned about what anyone might think. However, once the darkness has been vanquished, both Virgil and Gabrielle are embarrassed about their behaviour.
Virgil appears again in the episode "Who's Gurkhan?". He reluctantly poses as a slave trader in the slave markets and sells Xena to Gurkhan. When Gabrielle finds out, she is furious and insists that Virgil take her to Gurkhan's palace, offering her as a gift. Although clearly uncomfortable about this, Virgil does as he is asked. He then goes back to the ship to await Xena and Gabrielle's return.
In "The Abyss", Virgil and his friend, Hosep are seen running away from a group of cannibals. Virgil escapes from them initially but is captured by them after following them to their camp. He is placed in a hut with another prisoner, Rubio and learns his fate. When Gabrielle is also captured, Virgil offers himself in her place but is ignored. Luckily, Xena arrives to rescue Gabrielle and Virgil and Rubio make their escape. Virgil and Gabrielle hide in the woods and prepare to cut the vines that will flood the canyon below. By doing this, all the cannibals are wiped out and the party can relax for a while. This is the last we saw of Virgil, so we may never know what became of him.
Virilius
One of the ten warlords summoned by 'Ares' in "Ten Little Warlords". He and Tegason work together to ensure that most of their competition is wiped out. However, he and Tegason are killed by Xena and Ares.
Virillus Token
A lucky charm worn by Xena's brother, Lyceus and also by the young boy whose life she spared in the episode "Remember Nothing".
Visionary Voice Of Athens
Gabrielle is introduced as 'The Visionary Voice of Athens' by an actor in "When Fates Collide".
Vivlauser
In "Blind Faith" Palaemon says that Xena was a genius when she "invaded" Vivlauser "a few years ago". Apparently, she set their oil reserves on fire.
Vlaming, Jeff
Writer for "Takes One To Know One" and "Purity".
Vulcan
Vulcan was the Roman equivalent of Hephaestus, the smith god. His workshops were under Mount Aetna (Etna) and other volcanoes.
Vulcan Mountain
In "Prometheus", Xena is told by the Oracle to go to Vulcan Mountain to secure the Sword of Hephaestus, the only weapon that can break Prometheus' chains. The sword was housed in the Cave of Hephaestus, on the north side of the mountain. Tunnels and passages led up to the top of the mountain where Prometheus was chained. The mountain also contained a Temple to Hera, where her loyal warriors would be waiting to stop anybody trying to get through.
