However, Xena reveals her true identity and persuades Caligula to kill himself.

He is next seen in "The Black Wolf" where he is thrown into prison, thanks to Gabrielle and turns up once again in "The Greater Good" where he mourns the death of the warrior princess.
The last we have heard of Salmoneus (from HTLJ) is that he is serving a prison sentence for tax evasion.
Samite

Samsara
Many years ago, Samsara was a fierce Tretomlec warrior, when the Northern Amazons were little more than a scattered band of women whose menfolk had been killed by the Samites (see "Lifeblood"). Samsara is filled with hatred and a strong lust for revenge against the Samites for the deaths of her family at their hands.
When Cyane, a teenage girl, is pulled from the future into the past, Samsara is shocked that this is the Atma, their tribe's supposed saviour. She does not readily accept Cyane but does not go against Kahina's wisdom. She even saves Cyane's life, although she does this out of loyalty to her tribe.
Once the Samites have been defeated, Samsara wants to quench her bloodlust by killing each and every last one of them. Kahina refuses to let her do this so Samsara breaks her connection with the tribe and rides off alone.
In the present day, Samsara's spirit tries to prevent Xena from obtaining the Atma dagger. She realises that this will change the future of the Northern Amazons, making them a less bloodthirsty and more peaceful nation.

Sarah became 'first wife' to Gurkhan and treated the other wives with cruelty, anxious to maintain her position in the household. When Xena and Gabrielle arrive, disguised as captured slaves for Gurkhan's harem, Sarah feels threatened by the attention Gurkhan pays to them. However, Xena and Gabrielle soon discover her true identity. They rescue her and take her back to Greece to be reunited with her mother.

Cures for seasickness:- Altrech recommends ash - it settles his stomach. Xena's remedy is to jab the small bump on your wrist. Unfortunately this has side effects - it numbs your tastebuds. Anything tastes good, even things that are not good for you - like raw squid. Ugh!
Second Rhein Maiden

Once Celesta has been freed, she touches all the bandits, including Seerus, and they all die from their earlier wounds.

Eventually though, Senticles goes back to his toy making and a fairytale is born (see "A Solstice Carol").

Sirens
Mythical monsters. A half-woman, half-bird whose singing lured sailors at sea. A siren is mentioned by Marcus in "The Path Not Taken".
Sirens appear in the episode "Ulysses", when Gabrielle says "their song is said to call all men to their death on the rocks of their island". Whilst Ulysses has to be tied to the mast to stop him jumping overboard to his death, Xena and Gabrielle are unaffected by the sirens' song. Xena combats their singing with some of her own, thereby saving Ulysses from a cruel fate.
Sister Peaks
In "Sacrifice I" the place where Gabrielle's daughter Hope resided until her rebirth.

Slim Man
In "The Execution", this is the man who is sat on one end of the front bench which has been set out ready for the villagers to attend Meleager's execution. When a woman arrives and sits on the other side of the bench, this forces people to move up, thus pushing him off the end of the bench. He and the woman then start to argue but both are silenced by the arrival of Judge Arbus, who reminds them of the severity of the occasion.
Solan
The son of Borias and Xena. When Borias was killed, Xena asked her enemy, the Centaur leader Kaleipus, to raise and care for her child, as she was afraid she would not be able to protect him from her enemies (see "Past Imperfect"). As Borias had helped the Centaurs, Kaleipus agreed. Many years later, Xena returns for Solan but discovers that he hates her, believing she killed his father (see "Orphan Of War"). Xena denies this and eventually proves this to Solan but finds herself unable to tell him she is his mother. A year later, Xena visits the Centaur village where a treaty is being signed between the different factions in order to bring peace. However, Hope releases Callisto from the lava flow and then kills both Kaleipus and Solan (see "Maternal Instincts"). In the "Bitter Suite", Xena meets the spirit of Solan and apologises for not telling him she is his mother.
Later, we find out that Solan asked to be put in Tartarus so he would not forget his loved ones (see "God-Fearing Child"). Xena rescues him from Tartarus and persuades him to enter the Elysian Fields.
Solari

Soldier
One of Bellerophon's men (see "To Helicon And Back"). In her rage and grief, Gabrielle appears willing to strike him down, despite his plea for mercy. It is only the warning note in Xena's voice that brings Gabrielle back to her senses and stops her from murdering him.
Soldier #1
One of the soldiers encountered by Gabrielle and Agranon whilst they are on their way to see Jana's father at Boeotia (see "The Path Not Taken"). The same soldier then informs Gabrielle and Agranon that they are to be executed at noon the following day.

Sophocles
Sophocles makes a guest appearance in the episode "The Play's The Thing". He is portrayed as a ladies' man and he offers his arm to Gabrielle. Gabrielle turns him down, not knowing who he is. Later, she visits Sophocles to ask his advice about her play but she is shocked and horrified to see that his play is full of sex and violence.
Soraya
Soraya is the wife of the greedy merchant, Thadeus (see "Tsunami") who commissions a ship to take a group of convicted prisoners to work his diamond mines as punishment for their crimes. Soraya is pregnant but afraid to tell her husband because he does not want her to have children. He is afraid that she will die in childbirth as his mother did. However, when Thadeus tries to buy Gabrielle's help, Soraya loses her temper with him and tells him not to keep being over-protective of her all the time. It is her strength that gets both her and her husband to safety.

Spamona
In "Animal Attraction", Xena, Gabrielle, Amarice and Joxer are visiting Spamona when Xena finds out she is pregnant. Spamona is famed for its hot springs (and awful western-style sets!).
Sparta
Ancient city-state of Greece. Spartans were famed for frugality, courage and discipline. In the episode "One Against An Army" we hear that Spartans are fighting alongside Atheneans against the Persian invaders. In "In Sickness And In Hell", Xena mentions Sparta (along with Athens and Carthage) as a place where one warrior she knew had been buried by the Scythians.
Sphaerus
The son of a bloodthirsty warlord, he meets Gabrielle in a tavern and they are introduced by Gabrielle sitting on his lap and kissing him (see "Chariots Of War"). He does not realise that Gabrielle is the friend of Xena, the warrior he thought he had killed with an arrow earlier. Sphaerus seems reluctant to kill innocent people, which his father, Cycnus, admonishes him for. However, when Cycnus tells him that Xena killed his brother, Sphaerus is bent on revenge. Eventually, he realises this is a lie and that his brother was a peace-loving man, not the war-hungry warrior his father had described. This leads Sphaerus on a new path of peace and he makes the decision to discuss peace terms with the people his father had recently declared war on.
Stagira
Village just across the Sinus Strymonicus from Amphipolis. Stagirans are ancient enemies of Xena and her fellow Amphipolisians. Stagira is referred to in "Destiny".
Stallonus
One of the competitors for a place at the Athens Academy, Stallonus is enthusiastic about telling stories but is not really that good at it. He is interested in portraying lots of action but neglects the plot (obviously, he's been watching too much tv). It comes as no real surprise when he fails to win a place at the Academy but he doesn't appear to be too upset about it! See "Athens City Academy Of The Performing Bards".
Statius
Statius is a merchant, keen to make a profit by selling souvenirs of Mount Olympus to passing travellers. He doesn't seem to be having much success though as can be seen in the episode "Prometheus". Is his last name Dibbler by any chance?
Note: If you're not a 'Discworld' fan, then that last bit won't mean anything. You really don't know what you're missing though if you're not!!!
Steppes, The

Storekeeper
The storekeeper who is threatened by the slave boss in "Remember Nothing". Xena comes to his rescue, of course!
Storekeeper
When Xena and Gabrielle stop at a village to get supplies, Xena requests a sharpening stone from this shopkeeper. When a blind man enters and the storekeeper refuses to serve him, Xena changes her mind and buys the man a halter for his horse. However, she is suspicious when the storekeeper asks her about Gabrielle. Later, Gabrielle is kidnapped by Morpheus' followers and Xena returns to the shop to find out what the storekeeper knows. After a few threats, the man tells her that Gabrielle has been captured by Manus, priest of Morpheus and will have been taken to his mountain fortress. He is unable to tell her why though, only that every year one of the young girls of the village is taken there and never seen again.
Storytelling
According to Gabrielle, "Stories are meant to be told. Stories tell us who we are" (see "Giant Killer"). She relates several stories during her travels with Xena.
The first story features in the episode "The Titans", when Gabrielle attempts to delay the reading of the scroll containing the chant to release the other Titans from stone. She relates her story to the Titans, Hyperion and Theia: "Cronos was furious, as Zeus was trying to usurp his power. Cronos called all the Titans together in a great war council. Atlas was appointed general because he was the greatest warrior". Gabrielle then asks if they want to hear how Zeus got the thunderbolt or about the story of Prometheus but the offer is declined.
In "Prometheus" Gabrielle relates the following story to Iolaus: "Once, a long, long time ago, all people had four legs and two heads. The gods threw thunderbolts and split everyone in two. Each half had two legs and one head. The separation left both sides with a desperate yearning to be reunited, because they shared the same soul. Ever since, people spend their lives searching for the other half of their soul".
In "Altared States" Gabrielle tries to tell the story of the Trojan Horse to Icus whilst they are hiding in a cave: "…then suddenly, the soldiers burst out of the horse surprising everyone, and uh, and then the Trojans turned into growling lions, with blood dripping from their lips and then, oh, the Greeks they brought in an army of, oh, fire-breathing, tin-headed hydras. And this is very interesting isn't it?".
Gabrielle's storytelling bent continues in "Is There A Doctor In The House?". As she tends Marmax's wound, she relates the following tale: "There was once this king, his name was Libarius. He was a brave warrior, a great hunter. He was so proud of his hunting skills that he decided to test them in the sacred forest of the great goddess Artemis. She was so angry with him she turned him into a deer". (Marmax - "He became the hunted, the worst thing that can happen to a great hunter"). Gabrielle continues "That's what he thought at first. But then he bacame so fond of the peaceful way of the deer that he actually grew to love them. Of course, he still missed his friends and family, which made him very sad. So Artemis took pity on him and turned him back into his human form. It was the best thing that ever happened to him. He became a better king after the experience, a much happier man. He learned the true secret of life is to find peace in yourself and to share it with the world".
In "A Solstice Carol" Gabrielle tells a story to the children in the orphanage: "Once, in a land far away, there was a rich, but miserly man named Cresus. And his heart was so hard, that his servants begged the gods to intervene. They sent The Fates to separate the strands of his life, so that he might see himself more clearly. Unfortunately, Cresus didn't mend his ways. So the gods turned him into a spirit, doomed to walk the earth forever, as invisible to others as they were to him in life".
Gabrielle's stories begin to take a backseat in XWP as Gabrielle evolves (?) from a storyteller/poet into a fully-fledged warrior. Interestingly, in "Them Bones, Them Bones", when the next story appears, it is Yakut who relates it, not Gabrielle. In this episode, we hear the story of the World Tree. Shaman elders believe that at the golden navel of the Earth there is a tree that has many more branches than even the gods can count. Perched on each branch are the souls of unborn children. When a mother accepts what she is about to become, the child sends a message of thanks in the form of a dove.
In Season 6, Ares relates to Xena the story of the 'Scorpion and the Swan' (see "Path Of Vengeance"). A scorpion needs to cross a river and asks a swan to give him a ride. The swan thinks there is not much of a risk to itself because it will be helping the scorpion. However, halfway across the river the scorpion stings the swan. As they are both swept away, the swan asks the scorpion why, when it was helping, did the scorpion sting. Xena supplied the answer: 'It's what I do'.

Sumac

Sumarian Treasure
The much sought-after treasure in the episode "A Fistful Of Dinars". With the treasure was also the Titans' Key (the key to the whereabouts of Ambrosia, food of the gods).
There were four clues to solve to find the treasure. Two were held by Thersites (his own clue plus that of Klonig); Xena had the clue belonging to Lycus; and Petracles had the fourth clue. Klonig's clue read "Retrieve the jewel of Demester" (a ruby). Thersites' own clue read "The teacher's student" (pupil). Petracles' clue read "Is not incorrect" (right). Lycus's clue was a map, which Xena ate to stop Thersites getting his grubby hands on it!
Using the map, the treasure-seeking party found three statues and using the clues, worked out that the ruby had to go in the left pupil of the centre statue. They then had to wait until sunrise, when the way to the treasure was to be revealed. When they reached the treasure cave, via a trap door, it was indeed filled with treasure, from shields and statues of gold to chests of jewels and emeralds as big as a human fist. See also entry for Cimmarians.
