Rafe
Rafe and his partner, are partly responsible for Joxer getting beaten up by Leo and his thugs, as they stole Joxer's sword. Xena gets them to agree to help her (or suffer the consequences!) against Titus, the casino owner who ordered Joxer's death (see "King Con").
Rafe feels an instant attraction for Xena and ends up falling in love with her, but their 'relationship' is doomed from the start. When Xena, Gabrielle and Joxer leave town, Rafe stays behind with his partner.
Rama
In "The Lost Mariner", Hidsim calls Cecrops by this name. It probably means 'a great hero'.
Ranch Hand #1
In "Ties That Bind", two ranch hands are pursuing Atrius and trying to kill him. When Xena intervenes, she is relieved to find out from Atrius that he did not steal a horse, as they claim, but only took what was owed him.
Ransoms
In the episode "Destiny" we learn that the ransom Xena demanded for Julius Caesar was 100,000 dinars.
Raphael
An Archangel of Heaven (see "Fallen Angel", "The Haunting Of Amphipolis" and "Heart Of Darkness").
Ravenica
Ravenica was not a very nice person at all. She was a bounty hunter who was planning to capture Xena for a reward (see "Takes One To Know One"). Part of her technique for trapping her prey was to cut the tendons of her victims' horses so they could not escape. In this instance, it proved to be her downfall. Argo sensed the danger she was in and took steps to protect herself. She kicked her victim, who then flew through the window back into her room. Struggling to her feet, she was hit by the candelabra twice and fell on her own knife.
Red Valley Gang
The Red Valley Gang were responsible for stealing the Urn of Apollo, which they intended to trade for gold (see "Forgiven"). There were nine members in all, including Micah, Wayan and Lark.
Regent of Skiros
Miss Skiros' sponsor for the beauty pageant in "Here She Comes, Miss Amphipolis".
R.E.M.
Scientific abbreviation for Rapid Eye Movement during dreaming sleep and believed to be necessary for brain repair. R.E.M. is mentioned in "Send In The Clones", when Xena and Gabrielle are cloned in the present day by Alti and three XWP fans.
Rhea
Fearing for her sister's chastity, Rhea offers herself as a slave in her place (see "Ties That Bind"). When she is rescued by Xena and Gabrielle, she is afraid to go home, fearing she has shamed her family. However, both her sister, Areliesa and her sister's betrothed, Andrus are deeply grateful for her sacrifice and welcome her back with open arms.
Rheingold, The
The precious metal, secretly guarded by the Rhein Maidens. It is a lump of gold kept in a casket in a cave by its guardians. The cave is accessed through a watery entrance.
The Rheingold contains a deadly secret: only those who have forsaken love may control it. After tricking Odin to reveal its whereabouts, Xena steals the Rheingold from Odin and fashions it into a ring. She loses the ring to Grinhilda who possesses it for many years.
Many years later, Xena returns to the Norselands to find that Grinhilda is on the rampage. Determined to return the Rheingold to its rightful owners, Xena endures many trials and tribulations before she finally recovers the ring and gives it back to the Rhein Maidens.
Rhein Maidens, The
The three sisters who are charged with the guardianship of The Rheingold. However, they are trusting creatures and unwittingly show Xena where the Rheingold is hidden. Xena subsequently steals it from them but, many years later, returns it to them (see "The Rheingold" and "Return Of The Valkyrie").
Rhodes
A Greek island east of Crete. The island was mentioned by Satrina in "Past Imperfect".
Rhodos
One of the villagers in "The Titans" who is full of admiration for Gabrielle for what she has done for the village. However, the cunning Hesiod persuades the gullible Rhodos to help capture Xena and give her to Hyperion, in return for the rulership of a kingdom or two. However, when Rhodos and Hesiod present the empty cage to Hyperion, he squashes them both.
Ribs of Cronos
One of the many ways to kill a god is with the Ribs of Cronos. In "God-Fearing Child", Hercules says that no mortal has ever found the remains of Cronos. However, Hera takes him to the Forest of the Titans, where the remains of Cronos lie.
Riddle of The Sphinx
Gabrielle mentions this riddle whilst on her way to her home village (see "The Prodigal"). According to the myth, the Greek Sphinx set riddles for the inhabitants of Thebes and ate those who were unable to solve them. An Oracle told the Thebans that the Sphinx would kill herself if a certain riddle was solved, the riddle being: 'What goes on four feet, on two feet and three, but the more feet it goes on the weaker it be'. The answer was eventually found to be 'A man' (i.e. as a baby on all fours, in adulthood on two feet and in old age on two feet with a staff for support). Gabrielle mulled over why "Man can solve the Riddle of the Sphinx but not make a decent road map". Not much of a change there then!
Right of Caste
A rite passed on by Amazons at their death. It bestows all rights and possessions of the dead Amazon to the woman receiving it. In "Hooves And Harlots", the mortally wounded Terreis passed on her Right of Caste to Gabrielle when she tried to save her, thus passing on her title of Amazon Princess. The Right of Caste is mentioned in the episode "Is There A Doctor In The House", when a dying Gabrielle asked Ephiny to accept her Right of Caste. However, in "Lifeblood", a very much alive Gabrielle wanted to pass on her Right of Caste to Xena's baby daughter Eve. Only Amazons were allowed to attend this ceremony.
Ritual of Crossing Over
In the episode "Them Bones, Them Bones", Xena explains how to cross into the spiritual plane. You must be unified with one recently passed over. A creature from the forest, killed with the ceremonial dagger of a shamaness, will be the bridge to the realm of souls. Gabrielle crossed into the spiritual plane in order to confront Alti, in the hope of saving Xena's unborn child. Xena herself had previously crossed into the spiritual plane in "Adventures In The Sin Trade I".
River of Wailing
In "Forget Me Not", Gabrielle crossed this river from the Temple Of Mnemosyne in an attempt to rid herself of her terrible memories. This was the first of three rivers she had to cross.
River of Woe
In "Forget Me Not", Gabrielle crossed this river from the Temple Of Mnemosyne in an attempt to rid herself of her terrible memories. This was the second of three rivers she had to cross. The third river was not named but it can be safely assumed that it was probably called the River of Fire.
River Styx
River of Tartarus in the Underworld. Its boatman was Charon. The river features (fleetingly) in the episode "Mortal Beloved".
Rome
Setting for "When In Rome", "Livia", "The God You Know" and "When Fates Collide". It also features in "Ides of March".
"Round Killing Thing"
Xena's chakram, but referred to as a 'round, killing thing' by Princess Diana (see "Warrior, Princess").
Royal Athenean Academy Of Cooking
In the episode "In Sickness And In Hell", Joxer claimed to be a graduate of this Academy.
Rubio
In "The Abyss", Virgil is captured by a group of cannibals. He is put in a guarded hut with another prisoner who is thin and bony. He tells Virgil that his name is Rubio and explains that the only reason they haven't eaten him yet is because he strikes a balance between diet and exercise. When Xena comes to the rescue, Rubio is given control of the horses and told to take them to safety. Later, Xena asks Rubio who he is but he only tells her that his name is Rubio!
Rules of Survival
Xena quotes four rules of survival to Gabrielle. In "Dreamworker" she tells her:
"Number 1: If you can run, run. Number 2: If you can't run, surrender and then run. Number 3: If you're outnumbered, let them fight each other while you run. Number 4: Talk your way out."
Runes (related to Old English run, secret)
Ancient character or letter alphabet commonly used in Scandinavia. They were used for the purpose of secrecy and charms. Runic knowledge was assumed to have been introduced by Odin. Runes are discussed in "The Rheingold".
