Mac
Mac is a huge Joxer fan and self-proclaimed 'computer nerd' (see "Send In The Clones"). He is part of Dr. Alexis' research team, who are collectively responsible for selecting appropriate clips of Xena episodes to download into the Xena and Gabrielle clones.

Mac receives the dubious honour of Xena putting the pinch on him. He is also deluded, believing that he is going to be Xena and Gabrielle's first '21st century man'. Oh, apparently, he also has some of Dr. Spock's toenail clippings!

Macedonia
Mentioned in the episodes "Old Ares Had A Farm" and "Send In The Clones".

Macon
One of the prisoners on the prison ship in "Tsunami", Macon is a nasty piece of work. He is a murderer and has no thought for anyone but himself. When the survivors on board the ship are running out of oxygen, Macon tries to drown the injured merchant, Thadeus. Then, when he drops his wineskin whilst escaping the overturned ship, he wrestles with Xena for her wineskin. Even after Xena has saved his life, he shows no gratitude and wants to know what she expects from him. When she replies "nothing", he walks away shaking his head in disbelief.

Maecenus
In "Fins, Femmes And Gems", Maecenus is a warlord, employed by Aphrodite to take the stolen Mystic Diamond to her temple at Parnassus. However, Xena blocks off Maecenus' route so that he has to go around the lake instead. Then, Maecenus has to deal with Gabrielle who steals the diamond from him. Just as he and his men are about to shoot Gabrielle, Joxer arrives and swings her to safety. Not to be deterred, Maecenus gives chase but ends up entangled in Xena's fishing line.

Maell
The fanatical son of Anteus, who is jealous of his younger brother, Icus (see "Altared States"). Maell tricks his father into believing that their god wishes him to sacrifice Icus to prove his loyalty. Xena discovers the trick and gives chase. In the process, Maell is trapped on a collapsing bridge. Rather than let Xena save him, he plunges into the torrential waters below.

Magdelus
One of the Amazons who helps Gabrielle to change into Terreis' clothes (see "Hooves And Harlots"). She tells Gabrielle that Terreis was very wise.

Malik
Malik is Cortese's lieutenant (see "Death Mask"). He is ruthless and cruel and when Toris 'captures' Xena to prove his loyalty to Cortese, Malik decides to take the credit for himself. However, when Xena escapes, Malik captures Toris and has him beaten, knowing that Xena will come to rescue her brother. When Xena willingly walks into the trap set for her, Malik captures her and takes both her and Toris to Cortese's dungeon.

When Malik receives a message from Cortese (actually sent by Xena) informing him to storm the castle, he soon finds out he has been tricked by Xena. When Cortese is forced into revealing that the band of raiders are his troops, Malik charges towards Cortese to strike him down. Xena then intercepts and kills him.

Lord Malthus is a powerful warlord who stole the 'Ark of the Covenant' from Xena's friends and is offering this powerful 'weapon' to the highest bidder (see "The Royal Couple Of Thieves"). When the buyers arrive as guests at his castle, Malthus lets them view the weapon whilst warning them about the security measures he has put in place to avoid anyone stealing it. However, during the night, someone steals the Ark and replaces it with Malthus' dead body.

Maphias
In "Remember Nothing" when Xena has a chance to relive her past before she became a warrior, we meet Maphias, Xena's unlikely fiance. He is concerned about her strange behaviour and advises her to 'go with the flow' rather than try and fight a battle she cannot win against the three warlords who are in power. However, after causing Lyceus and Xena to be captured, along with the slave (Gabrielle) they have rescued, he manages to free them whilst grudgingly admitting he was in the wrong. When Xena makes the decision to return to her life as a warrior, her life with Mathias and her brother, Lyceus no longer exists.

Marathon
Town on the east coast of the Attica Peninsula and north east of Athens. Marathon is mentioned in "One Against An Army", by Phiddipides. He says the foreign troops had laid waste there and were headed for Athens, where Spartans and Greeks were fighting together against the Persians.

Marcus
Xena's true love, Marcus was first introduced in "The Path Not Taken". Marcus is someone who has done many bad things and once tried to change, but found it too difficult. Despite this, Marcus is killed whilst protecting someone else. In "Mortal Beloved" Marcus returns from the dead as a ghost, asking for Xena's help to restore the good souls to the Elysian Fields and the bad souls to Tartarus. Xena agrees to help Hades recover his Helmet of Invisibility if he will let Marcus live again so Hades grants him life temporarily. When Xena and Marcus retrieve Hades' helmet and return it to him, Xena persuades Hades to judge Marcus again and he agrees to let him enter the Elysian Fields where he waits for Xena to join him one day (although it looks like he's going to be waiting in vain if current plot developments are anything to go by).

Marga
Queen Marga is the current queen of the Greek Amazons, at the time that Xena and Gabrielle have redeemed Eve and Xena has slain half the Olympian gods (see "Motherhood").

Following a skirmish with Ares' army, Marga thanks Xena for her help and introduces herself and her second-in-command, Varia (see "Coming Home"). Marga then asks Xena to kill Ares, as he seems intent on wiping out her tribe. However, when Marga discovers that Xena has brought Livia, the bitch of Rome, into Amazon territory she refuses Xena's help and prepares for war against Ares' troops. Xena manages to draw Ares into a fist fight and, believing Ares to be mad, his troops flee.

Marga appears once more in "Dangerous Prey", where she is hunted down by Prince Morloch whilst trying to find out why members of her tribe have been disappearing. Morloch captures Marga in a cruel snare, tortures her and then sends her back to her tribe to give them a message. Xena finds Marga, who gives her queen's necklace to Xena to be passed on to Varia. Marga then dies in Xena's arms.

Mavican
Mavican is an ambitious warrior who wants to replace Xena as Ares' favourite (see "Succession"). When Ares laughs at her arrogance, she sets out to kill Xena in order to prove her worthiness. Ares is visibly impressed at her skill, when she attacks Xena and he decides to pit them against one another in a deadly game. Mavican is delighted at being given this chance but does not realise that Ares is more interested in testing Gabrielle to see if she has the nerve to kill Mavican. Even though Xena tries to tell Mavican that she is being used by Ares, she refuses to listen. Xena is forced to call her bluff and she and Mavican end up dangling on vines, over a deep pit. Afraid of dying without making a name for herself, Mavican calls on Ares for help and, in doing so, seals her fate. Ares rescues Xena but leaves Mavican to die.

Meg
Yet another Xena lookalike, Meg is a 'loose woman' who constantly gets in with the wrong crowd. She appears to be a bit of a schemer, but she isn't very bright, which means that her schemes tend to fall apart around her. In "Warrior, Princess, Tramp" she is involved with Agis, in a scheme to kill King Lias and take the place of Princess Diana on the throne. In the end, she helps Xena and is given a chance to redeem herself by becoming the palace cook.

In "Warrior, Priestess, Tramp" we see Meg running a brothel. She does appear to have a good heart though, as she naively believes she is doing the temple a favour by stepping in for Priestess Leah, when really she is unknowingly involved in an attempt to kill the Hestian virgins.

Finally, Xena convinces him that she is not the murderer and he realises his actions could lead to more innocents being killed. Fortunately, Xena manages to save Gabrielle from Callisto so all ends well.

Meleager The Mighty
Meleager the Mighty was once a fearsome warrior with a reputation for being lethal in battle. However, when called upon to save Gabrielle's village of Potidaea, it becomes apparent to Gabrielle and Lila that he has a bit of a drink problem. Meleager has lost his nerve and is fed up with killing. Luckily, Gabrielle and Lila manage to help Meleager to recover his lost confidence and save Potidaea.

When Gabrielle encounters Meleager again, he is in deep trouble. He has been imprisoned for murder and is about to be executed. The problem is that he cannot remember whether he did commit the murder or not, as he was drunk at the time. However, he soon realises that Xena has brought new hope to the soldiers and that they now have a chance of survival.

Mephistopheles
A made-up name, possibly from Greek words meaning 'not loving the light.' The name (used for a Devil) first appeared in the Mediaeval Faust legend. This Devil was renowned for leering, sneering and jeering.

Mephistopheles is the King of Hell (see "The Haunting Of Amphipolis"). He has been tormenting Cyrene's soul and tells Xena he will continue to do so until he is given some of Eve's blood. With her blood, he will become flesh and can then enter the world. He means to rule in place of the Olympian Gods.

At first, Xena resists him but she is unable to fight him in his own realm as he is too powerful. Instead, she allows him to enter the world, which will give her a better chance of defeating him (which of course she does). However, victory comes with a price as Xena must now take Mephistopheles' place as the King of Hell.

Mercer
Another commander at the Athenian fort (see "The Price") Mercer willingly hands command over to Xena. However, when Xena sends him out of the fort to obtain reinforcements, he disobeys her instructions to head North and takes the shortest route. Although he is badly injured, he manages to make it back to the fort and admits to Xena that he should have listened to her.

Miss Parnassus
Miss Parnassus has entered the beauty contest so the people of her village will not starve during the winter. However, she also resigns, saying that she will work alongside the rest of the villagers rather than lose her self-respect by continuing as a contestant. This does not please her sponsor, the Palatine Of Parnassus (see "Here She Comes, Miss Amphipolis").

Miss Skiros
A bit snotty, Miss Skiros holds herself apart from the rest of the contestants and appears to be the only one, apart from Miss Artiphys who wants to actually win. However, Xena saves her life, after which she too decides that winning is not worth it and resigns from the contest along with the others (see "Here She Comes, Miss Amphipolis"). Her sponsor was the Regent Of Skiros.

Enraged, he attacks Gabrielle with his axe but Xena retaliates by nailing him to a tree with it.

Monster Grinhilda
Xena melted down the Rheingold in order to harness all its power into a ring (see "The Ring"). When Grinhilda put the ring on her finger, she was given a burst of strength and she hoped to use this to defeat Xena. However, just as she was about to strike Xena down, the ring began to change her into a hideous monster. Xena remarked that she had lost what she valued most - her humanity and her beauty.

Grinhilda suffered for 35 years in the form of a monster and spent much of that time chained up, held by Odin's lock (see "The Rheingold" and "The Ring"). Once she had forsaken love, however, she could use the ring's power to break free, which she did. At first, she was bent on revenging the death of her son, Grindl and the pain that Xena had inflicted on her. However, in "Return Of The Valkyrie" Xena begs for her forgiveness. Grinhilda relents and is changed back into her own form.

Mystic Diamond
The North Star from the night sky. In "Fins, Femmes and Gems" the star was stolen from the Temple Of The Heavens by Maecenus so that Aphrodite could place it at the centre of her constellation. According to Xena, if the star is not returned to its rightful position in the sky, it will go out and the world will be in serious trouble.

Mystics
The Mystics were worshippers of the dream god, Morpheus. They held a fortress in the mountains which was protected by an army of warriors. At Solstice they would 'acquire' a maiden who had never killed before, and put her through a series of tests where she was tricked into killing to survive. As soon as she lost her 'blood innocence' she was sacrificed as the new bride of Morpheus. Gabrielle was kidnapped by the mystics for this purpose but put Xena's rules of survival (involving lots of running!) to good use.

Elkton, who helped Xena through her Dream Passage, was a Mystic of the old school, back in the days when the order was good. When he is reinstated as head of the order, he tells Xena that the only thing that will be sacrificed from now on is corn.

Mystic Warrior
One of the warriors sent by Manos to find Elkton and Xena (see "Dreamworker"). He is under instructions to kill them both. However, just as Xena is about to get her throat cut, her body disappears.
