Labottie
In "The Greater Good", when Gabrielle learns of Xena's death, she says she thinks Iolaus is in Labottie and, at first, means to go there to find him.

Lachesis
Lachesis is the second of the three Fates. She is the one who measures the thread of a person's life.

Lachrymose
God of Despair. He had never laughed nor kidded in his whole life and he hated puns, jokes and riddles. Lachrymose shrinks Gabrielle and Argo after they cross his path (see "Punch Lines").

Lackawan Valley
Mentioned in the episode "Old Ares Had A Farm".

Lady Of The Ring
Title given to Gabrielle by the Viking, Lord Erick (see "Return Of The Valkyrie"). She was so-called because she slept encircled in a ring of fire.

Lagos
One of Palaemon's thugs, Lagos helps capture Gabrielle (see "Blind Faith"). However, he and the rest of Palaemon's so-called friends soon turn against Palaemon and go after both him and Xena.

Laing, John
Director for "When In Rome", "Tsunami" and "You Are There".

Land Of The Dead
A sort of half-way house through which Amazons must pass before entering Eternity, via the Gate to Eternity. In "Adventures In The Sin Trade I", many Siberian Amazons were stuck there due to a curse by Alti, a shamaness and ex-Amazon who was exiled from their tribe by Cyane.

In "Lifeblood", Yakut's spirit could not cross over from the Land of the Dead into Eternity because she had died before her role in life had been fulfilled.

Lao Ma
Lao Ma was Xena's spiritual mentor and friend. Xena first met her when Borias arranged a meeting with the head of the House of Lao. Borias was fascinated with Lao Ma when she arrived and could not take his eyes off her. Xena, knowing that Lao Ma was having an influence on Borias, tried to kill her and was easily defeated. Although Lao Ma appeared gentle and vulnerable, she was more than capable of defending herself.

Lao Ma took Xena into her home and began to teach her to let go of her anger and desire. She almost succeeded, but Xena was not quite ready for such a drastic change and she ruined Lao Ma's chance of uniting the Houses of Lao and Ming by killing Ming Tsu. It is not clear what happened directly after this incident but sometime in the future, Lao Ma calls for Xena's help to combat the 'green dragon' and Xena returns to Chin. Whilst in prison there, she learns that Lao Ma had been executed by Ming Tien.

Largo
One of a group of bandits who attack Xena and Gabrielle in "A Day In The Life". Xena puts the pinch on Largo and starts to explain about it but Largo interrupts her, saying he has already heard about it so what does she want to know!

Lark
A member of the gang that Tara used to belong to (see "Forgiven"). Tara tricks Lark so that Xena can put the pinch on him and find out where Wayan has taken the Urn of Apollo. Once Xena has finished with him, she knocks him unconscious. Tara goes to kick him but Xena stops her.

Laura
Laura comes to Xena when she is in the in-between world and takes her to Heaven (as Lief did with Gabrielle) so it seems fair to assume that Laura is Xena's guardian angel (see "Fallen Angel").

Laurel
The village in which Hower and Minya live in "A Day In The Life". Hower reports to Xena that the giant Gareth is on his way there to "flatten our town."

Leah
Leah is a huge Gabrielle fan and has been employed by Alexis to select appropriate selections (i.e. clips from Xena episodes) to fill the Xena and Gabrielle clones' minds with memories of the lives of Xena and Gabrielle. Unfortunately, Leah seems unable to work objectively when it comes to her selections, which are littered with soppy 'Xena and Gabrielle' moments. Leah is meant to be a parody of subtexters everywhere! See "Send In The Clones".

Lefler, Doug
Director for "Sins Of The Past", "A Family Affair" and "Chakram".

Leo
Leo is the son of Titus, the casino owner who has Joxer beaten almost to death. Leo is not very bright and Xena tricks him into giving up Titus' ruby. When Xena abducts Leo as well, intending to trade him back to Titus, the evil casino owner is more concerned about getting his ruby back than his son!

Lessons Learned by Gabrielle
We know these are many. In "The Prodigal", Gabrielle says she learned "when to fight and when to talk, how to know the difference between a friend and an enemy and what it means to have a best friend." In "Death Mask", she says she learned inner strength and in "The Deliverer" that "if you let someone take advantage of you they will."

Levine, Michael
Director for "Cradle Of Hope", "Warrior, Princess", "Altared States", "The Quest" and "Ulysses".

Liberium
Liberium is the kingdom of Mineus, the haughty prince who was to marry Princess Diana in the episode "Warrior, Princess". The kingdom had ancient by-laws which ruled in favour of slavery. By agreeing to the marriage, Diana's father hoped the two kingdoms would unite to abolish the slave trade in their regions.

Licinus
Licinus is Istafan's security man and is always at his side (see "A Tale Of Two Muses") so when Xena notices that he is absent during Istafan's campaign speech, she suspects something is afoot. As usual, her instincts are shown to be correct when an assassination attempt is made on Philipon's life. Licinus suddenly appears and Xena confronts Istafan about the attempted murder. Istafan denies that Licinus is involved but then trips himself up when he asks Xena why he would want to kill Philipon.

Liddi, Allison
Director for "Little Problems".

Lief
Gabrielle's guardian angel who guides her to Heaven (see "Fallen Angel"). Unfortunately, before they arrive, Gabrielle is snatched from his grasp by the demon Callisto and whisked off to Hell. Lief is obviously upset about this but is determined to win her back.

Lila
Gabrielle's sister. In "Sins of the Past", Lila says goodbye to Gabrielle as she sneaks out of her home village. We next see her in "The Prodigal" when Gabrielle returns home. Lila is bitter that Gabrielle has not visited her and that she seems to be more interested in Xena and their adventures together than in her sister, who believes she must appear boring by comparison. By the end of the episode, Lila realises that Gabrielle has changed and that she would not be happy staying at home. She also realises that Gabrielle has not forgotten her.

Lila is not seen again until "A Family Affair" when Hope returns and tries to kill Lila. Of course, Lila does not, at first, realise that Hope is not Gabrielle. Following this, we don't encounter Lila again until "Takes One to Know One", when everyone gathers to wish Gabrielle a happy birthday.

Lila appears once more in "Who's Gurkhan?". Having believed Gabrielle and Xena to be dead after 25 years of no word, she is shocked to see her sister on her doorstep, especially as her older sister is now younger than her! All is not well, however, and Lila tells Gabrielle of their parent's murder by Gurkhan. Gabrielle also finds out that Lila got married and has a daughter, although her husband was also killed by Gurkhan. Gabrielle promises Lila that she will go to Africa and get her daughter back.

Lilly, Brenda
Writer for "Warrior, Princess".

Limerick
A nonsense verse popularised by Edward Lear in 1846. The Xenaverse covers many eras! In "The Quill is Mightier", Joxer composes his own but we didn't get to hear the ending so here's a chance to finish it yourself. It goes as follows:

A warrior, Joxer the Mighty
Asked a boon from the God Aphrodite
And what a surprise
He saw with love's eyes
Three times..........................?

Livia
Livia is the name given to Eve by Augustus to disguise her true identity from the gods (see "Livia"). However, Ares notes her progress and takes her under his wing. With his 'guidance', she soon becomes a champion of Rome and is to be Augustus' successor. See also Eve.

Locia
The village featured in "Ties That Bind" where Rhea and her companions were taken as slaves by the warlord Kirilus.

Lord Clairon
Organiser of the Miss Known World contest, Clairon has a vested interest in war breaking out between the warlords acting as sponsors for their various girlfriends (see "Here She Comes, Miss Amphipolis"). His plan to start a war does not exactly go as he wishes though, thanks to Xena's intervention.

Lord Lycost
The head of the house of Lycost. His family and that of the house of Menos have been deadly enemies for years. They have been fighting amongst each other for so long, neither family can remember what the dispute was about in the first place.

Xena manages to settle the dispute between the two families by reminding them how they once helped each other. She also points out that two particular members, one from each family are actually brothers (see "Been There, Done That").

Lord Menos
The head of the house of Menos and enemy to the house of Lycost until Xena secures peace between the two families (see "Been There, Done That").

Lord Of The Dark Land
The Lord of the Dark Land is Akemi's father, Yodoshi (see "A Friend In Need I" and "A Friend In Need II"). He was killed by Akemi. After this his spirit became so filled with evil that the Underworld would not let him enter. He becomes the eater of souls, which he holds inside him, enslaved. Harukata, the killer of ghosts, says he can only be trapped by another ghost.

Lost Athena Of Antigus
A carving so beautiful, men swore it came to life in moonlight (the full moon that is). However, pirates stole it and it was lost to the world until Cecrops reveals to Gabrielle that it is aboard his ship (see "The Lost Mariner").

Lost Mariner, The
The name given to Cecrops, who was cursed for eternity by Poseidon.

Loud Talking Thing
The forerunner of the megaphone, as seen in "Altared States".

Lucifer
In "Heart Of Darkness", Lucifer is tricked by Xena into taking her place as the Lord of Hell. Lucifer is an overly-confident Archangel, who believes he is the only one capable of sending Xena to Hell. As punishment, the other Archangels pretend to agree with him and let him seal his own doom. Xena then manages to trick Lucifer into committing the Seven Deadly Sins, thereby condemning him to become Lord of Hell in her place.

Lumeria
The town of Lumeria is attacked by the warlord Zantar, in the episode "If The Shoe Fits". Lumeria had had a good harvest and would, apparently, be loaded with extra cash.

Lyceus
Xena's younger brother who was killed when Cortese attacked Amphipolis. In "Remember Nothing", Xena is able to relive her past and Lyceus is alive again. He is presented as a strong-minded young man who believes in fighting for what is right, even if that leads to his own death.

Lycus
A friend of Xena's who is brutally murdered because he was carrying one of the clues which points to the whereabouts of the Cimmerian treasure (see "A Fistful Of Dinars").

Lykos, House Of
One of the two feuding families in the episode "Been There, Done That".

Lykus
Lykus is the son of Darius, younger brother to Argolis but older than his sister, Sarita. In "Chariots Of War", Xena saves Lykus from being crushed under some falling timbers when the settlers are attacked by Cycnus' troops.

Lynal
One of the orphans in "A Solstice Carol", Lynal is the one who steals Xena's chakram and places it on the top of the tree in the orphanage (as a decoration!).

Lynch, Paul
Director for "One Against An Army" and "Crusader".

Lysis
The priest of the temple of the Furies (see "The Furies"). Lysis tells Xena that she is being tormented by the Furies because she has not avenged someone's death. Thinking he is referring to Lyceus, Xena grabs Lysis by the throat. He hurriedly explains that it is her father he is talking about, not her brother.

Later, when Xena takes her mother to the temple in order to exact revenge, she informs the Furies that Lysis has been giving them bad fruit. Just before leaving, The Furies tell Lysis they will discuss this later. Lysis looks bemused and picks up a piece of fruit to check it.
