Eastwin Bog
In "The Rheingold", Brinhilda tells Gabrielle she thinks Eastwin Bog is where Xena and Beowulf went in search of the monster Grindl. Brinhilda later takes Gabrielle there to get her away from the battle between Xena, Odin and the Valkyries (see "The Ring").
Echidna
A monster of Classical Mythology, being half woman, half serpent, Echidna has been encountered several times in "Hercules: TLJ". She is mentioned by Joxer in "Warrior, Priestess, Tramp".
Egypt
Xena and Gabrielle travel to Egypt in the episode "Anthony And Cleopatra", at the request of Cleopatra herself.
Egyptian Prayer Scarf
In "Blind Faith" Gabrielle wants to haggle in the market. She buys a finely woven piece of "scrap" at a stall, for the princely sum of 2 dinars.
Egyptian Senna
In "Blind Faith", Egyptian Senna and palm oil are used to cure Xena's blindness. Luckily for Xena, Vidalus had some growing in his garden. He used it to make face cream!
Elderly Driver
This kindly old man, presumably a merchant, is first encountered in "Sins Of The Past". He is travelling the road to Amphipolis when he encounters Gabrielle, who is lying in the middle of the road in a desperate attempt to cadge a lift. At first he refuses but Gabrielle manages to persuade him when she offers to tell him the story of Oedipus. The old man says he already knows the story of Oedipus, as he knew him personally. Gabrielle's enthusiasm and willingness to listen to his tale earns her a seat on the old man's cart.
The next time he encounters Gabrielle, the elderly driver gives her a lift back to Potidaea without hesitation (see "The Prodigal"). Whether this is because he enjoyed her company the last time or because Gabrielle has disguised herself to look heavily pregnant, is anybody's guess. Either way, how could the poor man refuse?
Elderly Woman
The elderly woman who fights for a front seat at the execution site and then sits knitting a gruesome doll of Meleager, hanging from a gibbet (see "The Execution"). Judge Arbus calls her over to relate what she saw on the night the victim was killed. The woman tells Xena and Arbus that she saw Meleager stumble out of the stables with a bloody sword in his hands.
At the end of the episode, the woman is seen with her finished doll and is waving it about for all to see (a bit morbid, isn't she?).
Eldon
Rafe's partner in crime (see "King Con"). Eldon and Rafe are a con-artist double act and they wager on whether or not Rafe will 'score' with Xena. In order to win the bet, Rafe must get Xena to kiss him and Eldon doesn't believe he has a cat in hell's chance, particularly when it becomes clear that Rafe has fallen for Xena!
Eli
Initially a street magician, Eli realises his potential for healing and, as a result, saves Gabrielle's life when she is possessed by a demon (see "Devi"). Eli teaches Gabrielle the 'Way of Love' which leads Gabrielle to throw away her staff and abandon violence (see "The Way"). However, in "Ides Of March", Gabrielle chooses the 'Way of Friendship' instead. She decides her love for her friend is too important and that, unlike Eli, she cannot stand back and do nothing whilst her friend is in danger.
After Xena and Gabrielle have been crucified, Eli is tortured by guilt over the fact it was their diversion that helped him and his followers to escape the same fate (see "Fallen Angel"). He questions his pacifism, wondering whether there was something he could have done to help. He suddenly realises that there is something he can do and he attempts a resurrection. With the help of Callisto (of all people!) he succeeds.
In "Chakram", Eli helps Xena and Gabrielle to stop Kal and Ares from obtaining the Chakram of Light. Although he does not use violence to do this, he still manages to intimidate Ares.
Eli makes his final appearance in "Seeds Of Faith". Ares and the other gods feel threatened by Eli and the faith he instills in his followers and they want him dead. Eli is afraid but Angel Callisto appears to him and tells him he need not be afraid; it is time for him to leave this earth. When Ares finally confronts Eli, Gabrielle leaps to Eli's defence but he tells her he does not want her to fight for him. Ares stabs Eli who collapses to the ground, mortally wounded.
Elkton
The blind ex-priest of Morpheus, God of Dreams (see "Dreamworker"). He helps Xena to enter her 'dreamscape' and keeps her body alive by soaking it with oil (kinky!). Once Xena has rescued Gabrielle from Morpheus' minions, Elkton's sight is returned and he becomes a priest once more.
Ellsworth, Carl
Story for "Anthony And Cleopatra". Writer for "Looking Death In The Eye".
Elysha
Elysha appears in "The Execution". Some time ago (whilst Gabrielle was studying at the Athens Academy) Xena saved him from a vicious attacker. Afraid for his life, Elysha is still hiding out in the forest, in a place where Xena told him he would be safe.
Elysha still believes his life is in danger and, at first, it is difficult to understand why. However, when Xena mentions Judge Arbus, he explains that the judge is not as he appears to be and that he once knowingly sent an innocent man to his death. It seems Elysha's attacker was sent by Judge Arbus himself to silence the man from talking to anyone.
At first, Elysha reluctantly agrees to go with Xena to tell what he knows. However, when he realises she is taking him to Judge Arbus' town and not to Athens as he presumed, he panics and runs back towards the safety of the forest. I wonder if Xena ever told him it was safe to come out?
Elysian Fields
The Greek version of paradise, where true heroes spend eternity. As god of the Underworld, it is Hades' task to decide whether a person will go to the Elysian Fields or to Tartarus and this decision is based on that person's past deeds. If their good deeds outweigh their bad, they will go to the Elysian Fields.
The Elysian Fields are mentioned by Gabrielle in "Is There A Doctor In The House". She said it was a beautiful place. The Elysian Fields also appear in "Mortal Beloved", when Xena successfully persuades Hades to let Marcus enter the Elysian Fields, after he helped return Hades' Helmet of Invisibility.
In "The Bitter Suite", Gabrielle wakes up in the land of Illusia but mistakenly thinks she is in the Elysian Fields. In addition, Hades mentions the Elysian Fields when he is judging the dead in "Adventures In The Sin Trade I". The Elysian Fields are also mentioned in "When Fates Collide".
Ephiny
A brave and spirited Greek Amazon, we first meet Ephiny in "Hooves And Harlots". In this episode, she not only overcomes her prejudice against the Centaurs, she actually ends up marrying Phantes - a Centaur! From this union, she has a son called Xenan who is delivered by Xena herself. However, Phantes is killed trying to protect his wife and unborn child.
When Gabrielle is dying ("Is There A Doctor In The House") she asks Ephiny to accept her right of caste. Although Gabrielle survives (of course!) she later asks Ephiny to take her place as rightful queen of the Amazons. Ephiny agrees to rule until Gabrielle returns but is tragically killed in battle by Brutus (in "End Game").
This isn't the last we see of Ephiny though. She appears as a ghost to Gabrielle in "Last of the Centaurs", when she fears for the life of Xenan. All the Centaurs have been wiped out and he is the last remaining one alive. With Gabrielle and Xena's help, Xenan is saved and Ephiny can be at peace.
Eponin
Eponin is the Amazon warrior who teaches Gabrielle how to use a staff. She appears to take Gabrielle under her wing, encouraging her to learn the ways of the Amazon people.
Equestra
This name (presumably that of a deity) is called upon by the blacksmith in the episode "Been There, Done That", after he clumsily drops a horseshoe on Joxer whilst they are in the barn.
Eris
Eris is Cyane's second-in-command of the Northern Amazons (see "Lifeblood" and "Kindred Spirits"). Eris puts aside her old name when she succeeds Cyane as the new queen.
Eternity
The Amazon afterlife. When Amazons die, they pass through the Land of the Dead. From here, they must travel to the heart of a volcano to reach the Gate to Eternity.
Ethiopia
A country of North East Africa, Ethiopia is stated as being the home of Belize, a bidder at the auction in "Who's Gurkhan?".
Eumenides (Gr. for "The Good Tempered Ones")
This name was given to The Furies by the Greeks, as it would have been bad policy to call them Erinyes, their correct name.
Euraylus
Acestus' brother, who is sent to kill Xena and Gabrielle (see "In Sickness And In Hell"). However, Xena captures him, puts the pinch on him and then leaves him with Gabrielle whilst she is...er, otherwise occupied. After Gabrielle has dribbled on him a bit, Euraylus says he will tell them anything they want to know! However, Acestus attacks the village and rescues Euraylus from his prison cell.
Euripides
A rather pompous young man, Euripides is one of the contestants hoping to win a place at the Athens Academy (see "Athens City Academy Of The Performing Bards"). He uses poetic language for everyday speech, which confuses his companions no end. Nevertheless, this does not stop him from winning a place at the Academy.
Eve
Eve is Xena's daughter. When Xena was resurrected by Eli (see "Fallen Angel") Callisto the Angel chose to be reborn as Xena's child. Despite not having had any say in the matter, Xena was delighted to find out she was pregnant by holy means (does this sound like the Xena we know?).
Once the gods find out that Eve is destined to bring about the twilight of the gods (see "God-Fearing Child") they set out to destroy first Xena and then Eve herself. So begins their relentless vendetta against the warrior princess and her baby (see "Eternal Bonds", Amphipolis Under Siege", "Looking Death In The Eye" and "Motherhood"). Xena manages to fool the gods into thinking she and Eve are dead (see "Looking Death In The Eye") but her plan backfires. Consequently, Xena and Gabrielle sleep for 25 years whilst Eve is taken into Octavius' care.
Unaware of her true identity, Eve believes herself to be Livia, champion of Rome. She is groomed to be Octavius' successor but Ares, not realising who she is, also has a vested interest in her (see "Livia"). When Livia/Eve finds out her real name is Eve and that Xena is her mother, she seems unconcerned and disinterested. She is, however, jealous of the attention Ares pays to Xena. She challenges Xena to gladiatorial combat. Although Xena wins, she refuses to kill her daughter.
In "Eve" we see Livia rampaging across the countryside, crucifying Eli's followers. Xena follows in pursuit but cannot seem to turn Livia/Eve from her destructive path. Finally, it is a message from the heavens that makes Eve realise who she really is and what she has done. It is at this point she accepts her true name.
From this point forth, Eve undergoes a transformation. In "Motherhood" she allows herself to be punished for the atrocities she has committed. She is then baptised. Following her baptism, she attempts to apologise to Virgil for killing Joxer. At this point, she doesn't care whether or not he kills her.
Whilst resting in a tavern, Eve is stabbed in the back by Gabrielle, who is being tormented by the Furies. Seeing this, Xena chakrams Gabrielle. Both Eve and Gabrielle are mortally wounded but both are brought back to life by Ares.
On coming across an Amazon village in "Coming Home", Eve appears uncomfortable about something but remains silent. It is later revealed she was responsible for the massacre of many Amazons. When Varia finds out Eve is 'the bitch of Rome', she swears vengeance and Eve is imprisoned to await trial. Later, Gabrielle releases her and they both go in search of Xena. They are just in time to find Ares cradling Xena's body and crying out in anguish. Luckily, Gabrielle is now a dabhand at C.P.R.
In "The Haunting Of Amphipolis", the Archangels Michael and Raphael refer to Eve as 'the messenger'. It is Eve who has to fight Mephistopheles, although she grows weaker after each confrontation. In order to bring him into the world, Eve gives up a few drops of her blood, allowing him to take physical form. This gives Xena the opportunity to defeat him.
In "Heart Of Darkness", it is Eve who sees the growing evil in everyone's hearts. She is prepared to go up against her own mother if need be, in order to prevent everyone being overcome by darkness. For a brief moment, she takes up the sword again, willing to fight Xena, Gabrielle and Virgil if need be. Fortunately, this isn't necessary.
Eve accompanies Xena and Gabrielle to Africa in "Who's Gurkhan?" but stays on board the ship. She next appears in "The God You Know" when Xena and Gabrielle travel to Rome to save her and the other followers of Eli from the mad emperor, Caligula.
In "You Are There", even Eve loses her patience with Nigel, the irritating modern-day reporter. Later, she insists that she must be punished for her behaviour (i.e. punching his lights out!). She is last seen in "Path of Vengeance" when she leaves Greece to 'spread the word' about Eli.
Eve Of The Elisians
Title for Eve as follower of the Eli cult (see "The God You Know")
Executioner
The Executioner, summoned by Judge Arbus to carry out the execution of Meleager the Mighty (see "The Execution"). He is a grim character with a rather unimaginative wardrobe (i.e. robes that come in various shades of grey).
Eye of Hephaestus
In "The Xena Scrolls", Ares wanted Xena (Melinda) to release him from his tomb. To do this she had to strike the Eye of Hephaestus with her chakram.
Ezra
Another one of Xena's many disguises. As Ezra she is a supplier of fine quality merchandise to wealthy buyers (see "Vanishing Act"). She uses this disguise to delay Tarsus, who is intending to melt down the statue of Pax. She calls on her assistant, Bentley (aka Autolycus) to create a diversion whilst she makes sure the furnace is too cool to function properly. However, she and Myopia the fence (Gabrielle) start to take things too seriously by engaging in a bit of friendly rivalry whilst bidding for the statue!
Even when Tarsus sees through Autolycus' disguise, Xena acts quickly and pretends that she and 'Auto' are running some kind of 'scam'. She maintains her disguise as Ezra, right up to the moment she is tied up and imprisoned in a room with only one guard on the door (BIG mistake).
