Dagger of Helios
In the episode "The Quest", Autolycus is manipulated by Xena into stealing the dagger from the Temple of Helios. The dagger is actually a key, which opens an access 'hatch' to where a stash of Ambrosia is hidden. As Xena was trapped between worlds, she needed to obtain the Ambrosia in order to reunite her spirit with her body. What happened to the dagger afterwards is not known. It may have been spirited away, because, in "Seeds Of Faith", Xena says no person on earth knows where it is, but Callisto (being an angel) does. It appears from this episode that the dagger also possesses the power to kill a god. Xena wanted to use it to kill Ares.
Dagnine
Once part of Xena's army, he was responsible for the death of Borias (see "Past Imperfect"). Later, in "Orphan Of War", he plans to steal the Ixion Stone, which contains the evil essence of the centaurs and which will make him all-powerful. Xena defeats him with a giant crossbow.
Dagon
Leader of the Philistine army, Dagon employs Goliath, a giant, to help him defeat the Israelites. However, when Goliath is killed by David, Dagon and his army retreat (see "Giant Killer").
Dahak
Known as "The Dark One", Dahak is a new, evil god who plans to overthrow the old gods and bring darkness into the world. His servants, Khrafstar and Meridian, trick Gabrielle into helping them and she loses her 'blood innocence' as a result (see "The Deliverer"). Dahak then captures Gabrielle and she becomes pregnant with his child, Hope.
In the episode "Gabrielle's Hope" Dahak is described as the "blind force behind every evil will".
Damon
A ruthless warlord who is planning an attack on Gabrielle's home village (see "The Prodigal"). On hearing that the villagers have hired Meleager the Mighty to protect them, Damon captures him and offers him a deal: fight on his side or Damon will collect the bounty on his head. Unfortunately for him, he is tricked by Meleager and Gabrielle, who make their escape. Nevertheless, Damon goes ahead with his plans and attacks Potidaea anyway. His army are no match for Meleager, however, and he is heavily defeated.
Daphne
The young girl who is close to death's door after nearly drowning in the episode "Little Problems". Daphne befriends Xena when they exchange bodies and, with her help, forms a closer bond with her distant father.
Darius
Darius is a peace-loving farmer (excuse me while I throw up!) who is trying to raise his three (sickly sweet) children alone, after the death of their mother (see "Chariots Of War"). He helps Xena when she is wounded and they begin to develop a romantic bond, although they have very different views on how a rampaging warlord should be dealt with.
Darnelle
A big-mouthed, sexist ruffian who was trained as a gladiator by Xena in her 'evil' days (see "The Dirty Half Dozen").
Darsham
In the episode "Between The Lines", we are informed that 'darsham' means 'Enlightened One'.
David
David becomes leader of the Israelites, when Jonathan, son of King Saul is killed in battle. It is David who kills Goliath with his catapult (see "Giant Killer").
Deadly Sin Lottery
In "Heart Of Darkness", the Angel Lucifer gets the perfect score of 7 out of 7 deadly sins committed, thereby winning the first prize of a one-way ticket to Hell.
'Deaths' of Xena and Gabrielle
Xena was the first of the pair to 'die', in the episode "The Greater Good". Although she only appeared to be under the effects of the Talmic poison, the death was confirmed at the end of the episode, when Gabrielle said "when I thought you were...you know" (she could not bring herself to say the word 'dead'). Xena then said "I was".
Gabrielle took a turn for the worst in "Is There A Doctor In The House". She was mortally wounded trying to rescue someone and died whilst Xena was tending to her. Xena was unable to accept her friend's death and would not give up on her. She managed to revive Gabrielle, albeit unwittingly, using C.P.R. Whilst on 'the other side', Gabrielle said she saw her grandmother, her Uncle Morose and Talus.
Xena's second death occurred in the episode "Destiny" and this time it was confirmed by Niklio, the healer. However, Xena was granted a return to life, provided she could obtain some ambrosia (which she did). After this, it was Gabrielle's turn again. In "Sacrifice II", Gabrielle sacrificed herself to save Xena's life. This episode had fans really worried for a while, especially when Reneé O'Connor did not appear in the credits for the opening two episodes of Season 4!
At the end of Season 4, we witnessed the deaths of both Xena and Gabrielle. Xena's vision of their crucifixion at the hands of the Romans was fulfilled. After being resurrected by Eli (see "Fallen Angel") Xena and Gabrielle were given a brief respite, but in the episode "Them Bones, Them Bones", Gabrielle died yet again, when she crossed over to the spirit world to fight Alti. Xena (now a dab-hand at C.P.R.) saved the day once more. However, in "Looking Death In The Eye", Xena and Gabrielle were entombed in ice for 25 years, although whether this is classed as being officially dead is open to debate, especially as the melting of the ice around them revived them.
In "Motherhood", Gabrielle dies again when she is chakramed by Xena for stabbing Eve in the back. Surprisingly, it is Ares who saves the day, by giving up his godhood to revive both Gabrielle and Eve. Then, it's Xena's turn again in "Coming Home" when she drowns under the ice after a vicious fight with Ares. This time, it is Gabrielle's turn to administer C.P.R. (presumably after seeing Xena at work!).
Both Xena and Gabrielle seem to have got off lightly after that for a while, until, "A Friend In Need I", when Xena sacrifices her life to stop the evil demon, Yodoshi. Gabrielle then spends most of "A Friend In Need II" trying to reassemble Xena's body and save her friend from permanent death but Xena stops Gabrielle at the last minute, telling her she must stay dead so that the souls of the people of Higuchi are avenged and can reach a 'state of grace' (no, I didn't get that logic either).
Deilianism
Deilianism is referred to in "Warrior, Priestess, Tramp" as 'the one true religion'. The followers of Deilianism despise all Hestians.
Deiphobus
Deiphobus is the evil brother of Paris and commander of the Trojan army against the Greeks (see "Beware Greeks Bearing Gifts"). Paris trusts him implicitly and pays for this dearly when Deiphobus murders him. Deiphobus wants Helen to be his queen and appears willing to go to any lengths to get her. Fortunately, Xena rescues Helen from his clutches whilst leaving him to face the wrath of Helen's husband, King Menelaus.
Deirimus
The young son of Phlanagus and Nogalin, Deirimus had not seen his father for two years when suddenly he returned home (see "A Good Day"). When Phlanagus is killed in battle, Nogalin tells Xena that she will tell her son his father was a fisherman, not a warrior.
Dekayah
In the episode "Devi", Eli performs the Indian Rope Trick, with the aid of his assistant, Maya. When Maya climbs the rope, Eli says "Dekayah." This could be a corruption of 'dekho', which is Hindustani for 'look'.
Deliverer, The
'The Deliverer' appears briefly in the Temple of Dahak and attempts to destroy Xena (unsuccessfully, of course). Xena tricks him into the flames and he disappears, although whether he has been truly destroyed is another matter (see "The Deliverer").
Delphi
A place south of the Parnassus Mountains in central-southern Greece. Delphi is visited by Xena and Gabrielle in the episode "Callisto". They plan to stop Callisto from killing the Oracle and then blaming her murder on Xena.
Demeter
Demeter is the Earth Mother, goddess of nature and protector of defenceless creatures. Statues and/or altars erected in honour of Demeter appeared in "A Fistful Of Dinars", "A Day In The Life" and "Blind Faith". In "A Fistful Of Dinars", Gabrielle says the temple of Demeter is "the place for meditation and consideration for all the Earth that we can be thankful for.
In the episode "Succession", Demeter's temple was destroyed by Mavican.
Demios
One of the minor gods, Demios is struck down by Xena in "Motherhood". As he didn't appear to be much of a threat and only sniggered a lot, I can only assume she didn't like his laugh.
Democritus
A young priest who is only too happy to help Xena and Gabrielle attend the wounded in the episode "Is There A Doctor In The House?". When Gabrielle is wounded, Democritus goes to find her and nearly gets himself killed in the process. Happily, both he and Gabrielle manage to recover.
Demon
In "The Way", Xena captures a demon who was following her and Gabrielle. The demon holds black insects in its palm and blows them onto the ground where they all turn into demons. After the fight, Xena still has the demon pinned to the ground. He tells her that he and the other demons have been sent to stop her from reaching the Avatar. After further interrogation, the demon reveals that it was Indrajit, the King of Demons who sent them. The demon then burrows itself into the sand, turning into an insect. Xena steps on it before walking away.
Denmark
Country of north-west Europe and part of Scandinavia. Denmark appears briefly as a setting in "Return Of The Valkyrie".
Derq
The second of Damon's two scouts who are sent to Potidaea to deliver Damon's message (see "The Prodigal"). See also Athol.
Destroyer, The
'The Destroyer' was the monster child of Hope and Ares. In "A Family Affair", he tries to protect Hope at the cost of his own life (and hers as it happens) when he mistakes her for Gabrielle. A blue, spiky creature (rather like a hedgehog on stilts) he was killed by Xena.
(I personally thought 'the Destroyer' was quite cute and with a bit of love and tenderness could have grown up to be quite a nice person! After all, he didn't get much of a good start did he? I blame the parents!).
Destroyer of Nations
In a flashback, in the episode "Adventures In The Sin Trade I", Alti promises to make Xena a "destroyer of nations" in return for her help. Evidently, she kept her promise.
Devi
According to the episode "Devi", a devi is someone who has the gift of healing and is revered and respected by others. Eli mistakenly believes Gabrielle is a devi and is envious, as he has always longed for the power to heal. He does not realise until later that it is he who is the devi, not Gabrielle.
Dictys
Dictys is an employee of Mezentius (see "The Path Not Taken"). When his boss finds out he has been stealing from him and selling the goods on, it looks like it's curtains for him! However, Mezentius is impressed by his entrepreneurial skills and offers him a better job!
Di Leo, Mario
Director for "The Black Wolf".
Diomedes
One of the Black Wolves, a resistance organisation protesting against their treatment by King Xerxes. Diomedes is also Flora's love interest (see "The Black Wolf").
Dionysus
Dionysus is the Greek god of wine. The Roman equivalent is Bacchus. Dionysus is mentioned by Dictys in "The Path Not Taken".
Discord
Goddess of Mayhem, Discord is a spoilt child who pouts when she cannot get her own way. She is the lover of Ares (on and off, it seems) but has a taste for warlords and beefy men too. She angered Ares terribly when she tried to kill his child (by Nemesis) out of jealousy.
Djindar #1
One of the fearsome cannibals that Xena and Gabrielle have to face in "The Abyss". Gabrielle fights this one and is about to strike a killing blow when she has a vision of Korah, the boy she accidentally killed in the desert. As she hesitates, the Djindar stabs her with a knife before tossing her into the river.
When Gabrielle faces the same cannibal again, this time she does not hesitate to kill him.
Docenius
One of the tutors at the Athens Academy, Docenius tricks his pupils into thinking he has been attacked on stage (see "Athens City Academy Of The Performing Bards"). Gabrielle objects to this deception and tells the story of Celesta's capture by King Sisyphus.
When Docenius finds out that Gabrielle is not actually registered in the bard competition, he disqualifies her and she is told to leave immediately. However, her friends at the Academy refuse to compete unless she is reinstated. Docenius is not to be swayed, however, and it is actually a visiting guest of honour who insists Gabrielle should be allowed to compete.
Dockhand
One of the dock workers who advises Gabrielle to stand back out of the way as a group of prisoners board a nearby ship (see "Tsunami").
Doge of Messini
One of the warlords encountered in "Here She Comes...Miss Amphipolis". Doge enters his girlfriend in the Miss Known World beauty pageant. Not wanting to hurt his feelings, Miss Messini goes along with this even though she is unhappy about it. Finally, she withdraws from the contest and he supports her decision.
Dolas
One of Xena's early victims of her evil rampage as the 'Destroyer of Nations'. Dolas tells Xena he and his brother were the first to die when she raided his village (see "Dreamworker"). He also tells her that his brother's name was Linius.
Doppleganger
Xena meets her double whilst travelling through her dream passage (see "Dreamworker"). The doppleganger represents Xena's dark side and it taunts her, trying to make her embrace her dark side. Xena realises her doppleganger is the key to exiting her dream passage and she hurls it towards the door. An opening appears and Xena is able to pass through it.
Dorian
The Persian spy who poses as a Spartan soldier (see "One Against An Army"). When Xena is attacked by Persian scouts, Dorian pretends to freeze in fear when he is actually avoiding having to attack his own comrades. Not knowing this, Gabrielle rushes to the rescue and is hit by a poisoned arrow. Dorian pretends to be distraught about this whilst continually asking about Xena's plan so he can pass the information on to the Persian scouts.
Once Dorian knows of Xena's plan, he leaves to pass on the information. He later joins in the attack against Xena and Gabrielle. Despite the fact Gabrielle saved his life, Dorian tries to kill her at the first chance he gets. Xena intervenes and stabs him with a poisoned arrow. When Dorian rushes for the antidote, Xena is ready for him and snatches it away. Dorian lunges at her but Xena thrusts him towards one of his own comrades who then stabs Dorian by mistake.
Dorus
Dorus is the head priest of the Temple of Apollo. When the sacred Urn of Apollo is stolen from the temple, Dorus seeks out Xena and asks her to recover it for him (see "Forgiven"). He tells her that it gives people hope that they have been forgiven for their sins. Although Xena is sceptical about the power of the Urn, she agrees to get it back. When she does, Gabrielle and Tara go to Dorus to receive his blessing and forgiveness but Xena hangs back and refuses to participate.
Draco
Draco is the handsome warlord who wants Xena to fight by his side, raiding villages and causing general mayhem. Although painted as cruel and ruthless, he also shows a tender side (albeit briefly) when he agrees not to attack Potidaea, at Xena's request (see "Sins Of The Past"). However, he then double-crosses Xena by planning to attack her home village of Amphipolis. The next time we meet him, he has plans to sell some temple virgins into slavery but, after being hit by one of Cupid's arrows, he falls for Gabrielle and swears to change his ways in order to win her love (see "A Comedy Of Eros").
Dream Passage
According to Elkton the mystic (see "Dreamworker") the world of dreams has many passages. It is possible to travel from one place to another, bypassing the physical world. Once through the passage the body reunites with the soul. If you don't make it through, your body dies.
With Elkton's help, Xena uses her dream passage to access the fortress of Morpheus, in order to save Gabrielle from being sacrificed as his bride. In her dream passage Xena encounters many of her past victims. She first meets some of her dead warriors, dressed ready for battle and shouting her name. Next, she enters one of the villages destroyed by her army and talks with Mesmer and others from his village. She then meets up with Gabrielle, whose own dream overlaps with Xena's dream passage. After Gabrielle disappears, Xena has to confront the last person she killed (the bandit from the ambush that morning) and Termin, the first person she killed. Finally, she has to face and overcome her 'other self', the evil Xena of the past. To exit the dream passage, Xena must find the key, which turns out to be her own, evil self.
Dryads (Gr. drus, an oak tree)
According to Greek legend, dryads were tree nymphs. However, in "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", we are informed that their bones are the only things capable of killing the Bacchae. Interestingly, Classical Greek myth tells us that Eurydice, the wife of Orpheus, was actually a dryad.
Dustinus Hoofmanus
A proud centaur, who turns up at the theatre where Gabrielle is auditioning for her play (see "The Play's The Thing"). Honoured by the centaur's presence, Gabrielle tells him she will write a part for him. However, Dustinus announces that he does not play quadrupeds and will not be typecast!
During the play, Xena slices through Dustinus' costume, revealing his true identity. The crowd are delighted but Dustinus is not amused. Later, Zehra corners Dustinus and offers her services as his agent. Snootily, he tells her he would like to try his hand (or is that hoof?) at directing.
Dying Acolyte
Xena, Gabrielle and Joxer arrive at a temple to find most of the priests have been slaughtered (see "The Convert"). They find a young acolyte who is dying but manages to tell them that Kryton the warlord stole the female acolytes to sell into slavery and butchered everyone else.
